ACCELEROMETER DETAILS
An accelerometer is a device that measures proper acceleration, the acceleration experienced relative to freefall.
Single- and multi-axis models are available to detect magnitude and direction of the acceleration as a vector quantity, and can be used to sense orientation, acceleration, vibration shock, and falling. Micromachined accelerometers are increasingly present in portable electronic devices and video game controllers, to detect the position of the device or provide for game input.
Acceleration is quantified in the SI unit metres per second per second (m/s2), in the cgs unit gal (Gal), or popularly in terms of g-force (g).
Conceptually, an accelerometer behaves as a damped mass on a spring. When the accelerometer experiences an acceleration, the mass is displaced to the point that the spring is able to accelerate the mass at the same rate as the casing. The displacement is then measured to give the acceleration.
APPLICATION OF ACCELEROMETER IN OUR PROJECT
Accelerometers are also increasingly used in the Biological Sciences. High frequency recordings of bi-axial[5] or tri-axial acceleration[6] (>10 Hz) allows the discrimination of behavioral patterns.
The application that we have mentioned above requires an accelerometer to be monitored continously and the data to be fed to the controller. This controller then sends the data to the motors and accordingly the data has to be used by the microcontroller,
The motion of the motors will thereby decided by the accelerometer motion which in turn records the head motion..Thus finally the head movement changes the direction of the motor. the use of a stepper motor is recommended...however as a proof of concept a DC motor with a very low RPM is used in our example.
The accelerometer selection parameters would be taken into account to monitor the freemovement of the head also the sensitivity will be taken care of . The axis of measurment of the Accelerometer is also needed to know as per our application .
Also a major part of the project would be to send in the data wirelessly from the head gear unit to the motor UNIT.This wireless data reception unit should sent in the data to the controller unit.
